Natural Wonders: 5 Spectacular Waterfalls to See

Here at Actsoft, we’re committed to making sure your business runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible. A large part of how we do that is by helping you to reduce unnecessary waste. In doing this, your company can take on even more business and improve its bottom line. Another side effect of this waste reduction — one that we’re quite proud of — is the environmental benefits that come with it.

For example, consider the act of making the switch from paper to wireless forms. If your company averages 10 job sites per day, and each job site dossier is 10 pages, that’s 100 pages of paper each day, from just one employee. That works out to be 26,000 sheets of paper every single year. Let’s say you have 10 employees, that’s 260,000 sheets of paper each year that you’re no longer wasting needlessly. From an environmental point of view, that’s an estimated 3.2 trees saved each year. This might not sound like much, but it adds up. And yours is just one company. Imagine if every company, big and small, made the same effort to ditch paper forms. The impact would be astounding!

To celebrate our passion for the natural wonders of our world, we wanted to showcase some of our favorite Mother Nature–produced splendors. This week, we’re featuring our favorite, dreamiest waterfalls.

Victoria Falls, Zambia and Zimbabwe
We’d be remiss not to lead with arguably the most well-known falls in the world. One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this is the largest waterfall on the planet. While views of the falls are spectacular from almost any vantage point along the myriad trails that wend their way alongside the falls, the most unique is from something called The Devil’s Pool. This naturally occurring pool sits on the edge of the falls—yes, you read that right—and during the dry season when the water level drops, the brave can actually plunge into the water right at the cusp of its magnificent drop.

Niagara Falls, New York and Ontario
Stateside, this is the cataract everyone is most familiar with. A collection of three waterfalls—the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls, and the Horseshoe Falls—Niagara became the stuff of legends in part to a handful of risk-takers floating over the edge in barrels back in the early 1900s. While that is a thing of the past, the falls are still a spectacular sight to behold. If you’re looking for something super up close and personal, book an excursion on the Maid of the Mist. The scenic boat ride whisks guests into the basin of Horseshoe Falls; you’ll be supplied with a poncho, but plan on getting a bit wet anyway.

Iguazu Falls, Argentina and Brazil
These South American falls are nothing if not a powerful spectacle of sheer magnitude, being comprised of a series of around 275 waterfalls (the number can vary depending on the season), ranging from ferocious beasts to delicately descending flows of water. The average flow of water is a staggering 53,000 cubic feet per second, but at its peak, can soar up to 459,000. It became one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2011 and there’s no question why: in addition to the immense display of power from the falls, you may also be treated to sightings of toucans, howler monkeys, capybaras, and even jaguars, among other wildlife.

Angel Falls, Venezuela
The highest-known uninterrupted waterfall on the planet, water traversing Angel Falls plummets a whopping 3,212 feet from a tabletop mountain into the Devil’s Canyon down below, feeding into the Carrao River. Since the falls are located in a remote Venezuelan jungle, a trip to this spot can only be made by air, so the best way to see it is to book a tour.

Havasupai (Havasu) Falls, Grand Canyon, Arizona
At just 100 feet tall, these falls may not be as impressive in size as many of the others found on our list. But the real vision of awe is the dazzlingly blue-green color of the water that cascades over a ledge into an enticingly refreshing, sparkling emerald pool. From there, it continues on to flow into a series of smaller plunge-style pools, beckoning any weary traveler on a hot desert day. If you’re planning to camp around the area, be sure to book reservations well in advance; the falls are located on the Havasupai Indian Reservation, who want to preserve the falls by limiting visitors.

Three Essential Tips for Improving Time Management

Time is the one of the few resources that can’t ever be gained back once it’s been spent.

This statement particularly resonates in the workplace setting, where optimized productivity and the acquisition of true efficiency are essential to success. Because abundant surpluses of wasted time can be detrimental to high motivation, ensuring that your company’s time management skills are adept is vital.

Every single second that passes by is a moment that’s filled with opportunity, and by making the most out of the time you spend in the workplace, you can even gain more out of your leisure time away from the office. It’s a reciprocal relationship, as coming back to work from a vacation recharged and refocused also can assist you with sustaining long-term productivity at work. Here’s three tips that may help you enhance the effectiveness of your time management skills.

Work smarter, not harder.

There’s a fine line between cutting corners and working efficiently. When completing daily tasks during the workday, finding ways to consolidate and multi-task, while also ensuring that each job is being done to a satisfactory level is key. Accessing the right resources from the get-go before completing a project is a surefire way to make sure that your productivity won’t suffer later on, and that your workforce will remain firing on all cylinders. If there’s a way to simplify a task without compromising on the quality of work being done, it’s usually a smart idea to do so.

Schedule accordingly.

While too much rigidity in scheduling can actually become a deterrent to improved time management, crafting a flexible outline of weekly tasks, deadlines, and meetings can help you sharpen your punctuality. This extends beyond the scope of the workplace as well. When planning a vacation, it’s wise to have some concrete, scheduled events on the itinerary, but make sure you don’t overbook. The whole point of a getaway is to relax, and stressing over getting to certain events at every hour of every day can wear thin quick. In short, plan as much as you can ahead of time, but leave some room for the unexpected.

Use tools to help you manage time and improvise better.

Technology has always been centered on making life easier, and as time progresses, our reliance on it continues to increase. With Actsoft’s solutions, your company can truly optimize its productivity, helping you save time, money, and resources. Some of our digital tools like Mobile Timekeeping and Job Dispatching can help you ensure that your mobile employees are maximizing their time while in the field. This tandem of features allows them to clock-in directly from mobile devices and receive updates about new work orders in near real-time. GPS Tracking from Actsoft also provides the ability to monitor remote employees, so you can verify your workers’ respective locations while they’re dispersed at different job sites.

Improved time management is key to optimized margins, a healthy bottom line, and ultimate customer satisfaction. With Actsoft, your workforce can enhance its productivity on an hourly basis, helping you gain the most out of each and every minute that your business is operating.

5 Tips for Improving Your Fleet’s Safety

When you’re the owner of a business with a fleet of vehicles, whether it’s a local delivery service or long-haul trucking, safety is always a primary concern. Safe driving factors in big to your company’s bottom line, including brand reputation. But when your drivers are constantly on the go, how do you keep on top of these practices? Here, five tips to help you do just that.

Perform Regular Maintenance
As we’ve discussed before, consistent maintenance is essential for keeping your fleet, no matter the size, in tip-top shape; it helps you avoid bigger, costlier fixes down the road due to negligence. But that regular checks also keep you and your drivers safer while on the road, by giving you the heads up about any issues before they become too serious. Setting up alerts through our software helps to make sure you don’t miss any of those important, regular appointments. (Bonus: You’re also more likely to save money by keeping your vehicles in the best possible shape.)

Keep Tabs on Driver Behavior
You hire the drivers that seem best suited for the job, but you can’t always be there to make sure they’re constantly delivering peak performances. However, with our fleet monitoring tools, you can keep track of certain behaviors, such as hard braking and accelerating, speeding, and even making sure they’re sticking to preapproved routes. Plus, we offer an ELD solution that keeps drivers in compliance with FMCSA regulations, so you know without a doubt that your drivers are taking the required break times rather than staying on the road for an unsafe length of time.

Incentivize Good Behavior
Sometimes the better incentive is to reward drivers that go above and beyond, rather than just reprimanding those that don’t meet expectations. With driver behavior tracked and logged, it’s easy to set up a reward system for those that regularly hit top marks. This could be in the form of a monetary bonus, extra time off, or even preferential schedules/routes. After all, regularly practicing safe behavior is going to save you money in the long run.

Provide Coaching
Similar to incentivizing drivers who regularly demonstrate stellar driving skills, having detailed reports about the not-so-great behavior of drivers can be used as a learning opportunity. Provide coaching to these drivers and give them a chance to improve based on real feedback from their time on the road. Most people are willing to take the time to improve their skills when given the opportunity.

Reduce Distracted Driving
Our driver-monitoring tools run in the background, without operators being required to actively engage while behind the wheel, so they can just focus on driving. But that doesn’t mean they’re distraction free … from their own devices. We’ve discussed ways to help prevent distracted driving in the past. Encourage your employees to actively avoid these distractions when they should be paying attention to the road. And if self-control is an issue, there are apps to help with that.

Actsoft’s Applications in the Shipping Industry

Two things that constantly hang in the balance of success for a shipping company’s daily operations are the quality of the goods they’re transporting, and the timeliness with which they’re delivered to a destination. Transportation companies today choose to make keeping both of these things optimized a priority, and many leverage them as positive differentiators between their services and those of their competitors to gain advantages in the marketplace. In addition to attracting and retaining business, heightened efforts to ensure that products arrive on time and in excellent condition also save shipping companies time and money by paying significant dividends back into their bottom lines.

To help transportation businesses find these sought-after optimizations, Actsoft’s solutions are there to provide an extra measure of insight for company administrators regarding their business’s daily operations. Key features that we support including Wireless Forms, Electronic Logging Devices (ELD), and GPS Tracking allow shipping companies to fine-tune the various facets of their respective workforces for efficiency, security, and savings.

Wireless Forms

Using Wireless Forms, workers of shipping businesses can digitally transmit back important data from the field to their company’s headquarters nearly instantly. Records of completed orders that are filled out by remote employees via mobile devices eliminate the need for paper forms, and simplify business. As non-digital documents can be easily lost, costly to print from an annual perspective, and lengthier to process, our Wireless Forms tool has monumental influence on increasing virtually any company’s operational efficiency.

ELD

Powered by VisTracks, Actsoft’s ELD solution can provide transportation companies with increased stability by taking much of the guesswork out of their drivers’ jobs. As a capable application that’s fully certified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), our ELD solution helps employees verify that they’re staying in compliance with Hours-of-Service (HoS) mandates, as established by the FMCSA through automated driver data recording. Fines resulting from errors in manually-logged information can end up costing shipping businesses thousands of dollars, and when equipped with a powerful tool like ours to help mobile workers attain higher levels of consistency, companies can avoid as many of these fees as possible.

GPS Tracking

GPS Tracking from Actsoft can help shipping companies keep tabs on their mobile drivers in near real-time, and make sure that their transit networks are operating in fashions that are safe, secure, and expedited. Fuel-efficient routes can also be planned out using this feature, which help businesses implement some of the most standardized and budget-conscious methods possible when it comes to moving goods.

5 Must-Visit Theme Parks Perfect for Family Vacations

With Memorial Day weekend upon us, now is the time of year when families begin to pack up their suitcases and take to the road for their annual vacations. And really, this is the ideal time for it. The weather is at its best, the kids are out of school, and most seasonal destinations are finally open and ready for business.

More specifically, it’s during this time that our favorite type of summertime venue opens up nationwide: theme parks. What better way to bond with your family than a trip to some fantastical wonderland replete with thrill-inducing rides, games galore, and all the indulgent food you could dream of?

From a business perspective, with summer getaways comes the issue of coverage, since so many people regularly request to be away from work during this time period. Of course, vacations are extremely important for the betterment of any employee, but you still have a business to run. So how do you manage your workload with just a fraction of your crew?

That’s where our software comes into play. It’s an ideal means of keeping track of who is available at any given time. With the Timekeeping feature, it’s easy to see what workers are clocked in at a glance, so delivering work orders in advance is simple and can be done without question. For last-minute requests that may come in from your customers, simply track which employees are actively on duty at the moment and dispatch assignments according to availability. Or, if you’re at capacity for the day, you can easily manage your customer’s expectations and schedule them at the soonest time possible. And, if your team is responsible for keeping valuable equipment and/or vehicles at home, our asset and fleet tracking capabilities can give you peace of mind while folks are out of town.

Now that you can rest a little easier as vacation season begins, we wanted to share some of our favorite theme parks from across the country. Each one is delivers something different and unique to satisfy any family’s taste.

Don’t Miss: Want to see what can be done with 32 million LEGO bricks? Stroll through Miniland USA to see giant recreations of famous U.S. destinations, like New York City, Las Vegas, and Kennedy Space Center. There’s even an homage to the classic Star Wars film series, including a replica of the Millennium Falcon.

Hersheypark
Where: Hershey, Pennsylvania
Who It’s For: Chocoholics
Season: March–January
What better way to satisfy your sweet tooth than an entire park built around everyone’s favorite childhood candy supplier? Of course, chocolate can be found around every corner but you’ll also find all the staple rides you’d expect at any theme park.
Don’t Miss: Learn all about the company that is the reason this theme park even exists. Yanny vs. Laurel: The Polarity of a Single Sound

If there’s anything we’ve learned over the past few days, it’s that sounds can be subjective, and also intensely debated.

Yanny or Laurel? Which is it?

The argument over what is actually being said in a now-viral audio clip exploded last week when an online poll was published on social media, asking people whether they were hearing the voice on the clip saying the word “Yanny” or the word “Laurel.” Since then, the discourse ramped up on an unprecedented scale, with #teamyanny and #teamlaurel trending on Twitter, and scores of posts related to the audio clip being penned from all over the country.

As reported by CNN, Brad Story, professor of speech, language, and hearing at the University of Arizona, said that the science behind the sound byte’s perception primarily lies in the recording’s quality, as well as the different mediums that people choose to listen to it through, like mobile devices and headphones. These, he said, could naturally leave the clip open to some discrepancies in terms of the ways that individuals were audibly processing the recording. However, Story also conducted an acoustic analysis of the clip by recording his own voice saying each respective word, and then visually analyzing the frequencies of those recordings in comparison to the waves of the original byte.

He found that certain letters in the separate clips he recorded displayed striking similarity in terms of resonance, and Story also said that altering the pitch of the viral version can even result in both words being able to be heard. And while the debate over which word is truly being articulated ultimately simmers down to a lack of clarity within the audio of the original sound byte, once these slight scientific nuances are also thrown into the mix, it’s certainly much easier to now see how one person’s Yanny could be another’s Laurel.

At Actsoft, we’re all about helping businesses find better levels of clarity that can result in streamlined operations and boosted efficiency. Through our solutions, administrators can gain assistance in directing the various facets of their mobile workforces by conveying information to remote workers with less ambiguity and more sharpness. Features of our applications like GPS Tracking provide clear communications of where remote employees are in near real-time, and with the security of our Messaging tool, your organization can connect freely, knowing that memos and work orders are untampered with and sent to employees as originally intended.

During critical situations when productivity hinges on the clear delivery of instructions, there’s little room for debate, Yanny and Laurel aside. Let Actsoft help your business improve its internal communication and transparency today, and begin to discover unparalleled ease when it comes to coordinating the different aspects of your mobile workforce.

Exploring Disney World’s Behind-the-Scenes Secrets

Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner, which means families everywhere will be firing up their grills to cook up feasts as they tip their hats in salute to all those who have served the country. This weekend also marks the unofficial start of the summer holiday travel season.

With the kids out of school and the weather universally warmer all over, it makes sense that more people — particularly families — hit the road this time of year. One of the most popular destinations in the country is none other than Orlando’s Disney World. Magic Kingdom alone hosts some 20 million visitors every single year, with the peak season being the weeks that fall between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

As you traverse the winding paths of the various parks that make up Disney World, imagine for a minute just how much goes into making your experience go off without a hitch. As they say, the devil is in the details; following are just a few of the lesser-known things Disney officials do in order to maintain all of the illusions put forth at the Happiest Place on Earth.

Cookies in the Air
Ever noticed how, no matter where you are in the Magic Kingdom, smells of fresh-baked cookies or popcorn are constantly assaulting your senses in the best way possible? That’s not exactly coming from the food shops scattered around the park. Instead, contraptions called Smellitzers actually pump these scents into the air, evoking a sense of childhood nostalgia in guests. (And they also probably, to an extent, help keep guests in line. Who’s gonna misbehave in grandma’s kitchen?)

Trashy, Trashy, Trashy
Fun fact: When planning the design for his parks, Walt Disney was such a perfectionist, he actually visited other parks to survey guest behavior. One thing he noticed? People will hold onto garbage for an average of 30 steps before dropping it on the ground. As such, you never have to walk more than 30 steps without finding a trash can. Speaking of waste, ever wonder where the detritus from all those daily thousands of visitors goes? Trash is whipped through pneumatic tubes at about 60 mph, transported to a designated location where it is sorted, and then shipped off to a landfill or recycling plant. Talk about efficient.

Keeping the Illusion
Under the parks are a series of utilidors (utility corridors) that are used, in part, to help keep the fantasy alive. The story is that, back in the day, Walt saw a cowboy cast member waltzing through Tomorrowland at the California park and it upset him. (What would a cowboy be doing in a futuristic landscape?) So when the much grander Florida park was being built, he ordered that a network of underground tunnels be built, so “off-duty” characters could get around the park without being spotted in the wrong section.

Book ‘em, Pluto
Unfortunately, even at the Happiest Place on Earth, shenanigans happen. But the last thing Disney officials want is to cause a scene and disturb more park guests than necessary. So when a guest is excessively out of hand, or discovered to be shoplifting, it’s said that security will enter quickly and discreetly escort the perpetrator through one of the many doors leading “backstage.” At that point, they’re kept in a holding room until police arrive, or they may simply be escorted out of the park altogether. Park bans may also result, the length of which is reflected by the severity of the infraction.

While Disney may officially be pretty tight-lipped about many of the secrets that transport guests to a fantasy world, it’s all to help maintain the illusion. All that work behind the scenes is for the benefit of their customers.

Similarly, the software we offer helps businesses complete their tasks by adding a deeper level of efficiency behind the scenes. Your customers don’t necessarily need to know every step you take in order to get from point A to point Z; what matters is that the experience of taking them from start to finish is as pleasant an experience, and with as few hiccups, as possible.

For example, our latest feature — Form Workflows — allows colleagues to collaborate on projects, with different people taking responsibility for various sub-tasks. This creates a seamless transition between workers, complete with the ability to reject tasks if not completed correctly.

With GPS Tracking, office managers can always keep tabs on, say, drivers on the road, so if customers are wondering when their serviceperson is expected to show up, it’s easy to pinpoint their location and give an estimate. Plus, as new jobs come up, the nearest technicians can be assigned, shortening the amount of time before they show up.

And by opting to get rid of paper forms in lieu of going digital, processes are sped up and information is collected much more accurately than when dealing with potentially illegible handwriting.

These are just a small sample of the ways our software can help smoothen out the everyday activities your company does. By making a few changes to your daily processes, you’ll quickly start to see big changes in productivity and efficiency. What’s more is that your customers will also start to notice these improvements, without needing to know any of the changes made to improve their experience with you.

How Missed Workflow Steps Affect Your Bottom Line

What happens when a logistical connection between a company’s administrative team and its mobile workforce is broken during the course of a job’s progress?

Usually, smaller instances of communicative disconnect like this between management and employees result in nothing but mere inconveniences to the deadline of a project. However, missed steps in workflows can add up insurmountably over time, and ones that occur at especially non-ideal times can end up wreaking havoc on a job’s timeline and long-term goals.

Actsoft engineers smart solutions designed to help businesses with a mobile workforce alleviate many of the common pain points associated with effectively managing dispersed teams and assets. Our powerful tools aid in fostering intertwined, contemporary workforces that are ultra-connected and communicate well internally.

Jeffrey Gatt, Actsoft’s chief financial officer, knows firsthand the positive impacts that strong communication paths and improved collaboration can have on the success of an organization’s budget and various objectives. The implications of making both of these a business priority can save companies time and money in crucial situations.

“Any time you have efficiencies and standardizations in process, you can’t help but improve a bottom line,” said Gatt. “When you collaborate, you’re bringing in multiple viewpoints, and gaining valuable ideas from different areas.”

The kaleidoscope of applications that Actsoft creates can help businesses achieve these protocols that actively assist in optimizing workforce productivity. Aspects of our solutions like Wireless Forms remove paper from the equation when it comes to the completion and submission of work documents, helping to prevent discrepancies with information flows. Form Workflows is one of the latest enhancements to Wireless Forms, and is a powerful new feature that enables team members to work more closely together on filling out digital documents via seamless wireless handoffs.

Don’t let breaks in communication negatively affect your business’s bottom line and time management. Allow Actsoft to help your company create harmonious internal connectivity, reduce instances of missed workflows, and meet operational objectives today.

Making the Most of Your Ice Cream Truck Business

Summer is almost upon us! For those of you unfortunate souls living up north, we know how trying (and seemingly never-ending) this past winter was, so we can imagine the jubilation you all feel now that you’ve had the opportunity to thaw out, since Mother Nature finally deemed it time to grace you all with a steady stream of beloved warm weather.

As the mercury rises, so returns all the familiar sights and sounds that we look forward to every year after Jack Frost is sent packing. Birdsong greets you everywhere you go. The scent of blossoming flowers is virtually unrelenting. Rolling swaths of greens are filled with sunbathers, eager to soak up some vitamin D. And that persistent chime — you know the one — spills out of slowly roving ice cream trucks, beckoning passersby, urging them to splurge on a refreshingly icy treat.

Running a successful ice cream truck business is a bit different than selling the same product from a brick and mortar location. When faced with a drought in the customer department, you have the luxury of closing up shop and changing locales at the drop of a dime; it’s quite the advantage over immobile spots that must remain fully dependent on a single location.

A school might be a hot spot to stay perched outside of (especially when classes let out), but that same spot is probably not as likely to do so well on the weekends since class is typically out of session. Conversely, a densely populated park may seem like a no-brainer, but for any number of reasons, it’s not; maybe your park pick is actually a major fitness destination, making sugar-filled treats less likely to be enticing to its patrons.

Having the ability to track your sweet-eat fleet’s whereabouts can be a serious advantage, one that empowers you to monetize a business like this as much as possible. Imagine being able to have definitive data detailing exactly where each truck set up shop for the day and then being able to compare it to the number of sales that were made. Using the breadcrumb-trail feature, you can follow these types of patterns, which can lead to better instruction given to your drivers — like vetoing a location that never quite seems to do well.

Additionally, you can make sure the drivers you entrusted with your livelihood are actually worthy of that trust. The same tracking feature that keeps your staff accountable, helping to guarantee that they are always at approved coordinates, also gives you the ability to make sure your mobile freezers aren’t being used for personal business on the side.

International Port Cities and Global Trade

Trade networks across the globe play an instrumental role in the continuous upkeep of the world’s economy.

They’re the superhighways of international exchange, and the collective spinal cord of global commerce. Every single day, millions of goods travel along these networks to provide populations with vital resources. The port cities serving as funnels for the mass distribution of goods take in these extraordinary amounts of supplies via airplane or boat, and then redirect them to specific locations through effective transport via roads and streets. Without all of these parts of world trade seamlessly coalescing, many of the things we constantly have at our disposal wouldn’t be available.

Some of the globe’s most prevalent port cities like Sydney, London, Singapore, and Miami also stimulate continued economic growth of the world’s economy by having become highly developed in terms of service-providing. The advent of digital banking and the internet have allowed for glistening, futuristic skylines to emerge from the ground up at many of these type of port cities, enabling them to serve as global hubs for information storage as well.

Businesses that frequently operate in port cities and shipping alike can use Actsoft’s software to upgrade the potency and efficiency of their daily workflows. Enhanced communication and better teamwork can follow as a result of implementing a smarter answer to fluidize daily operations, and we’re here to help your business find that solution.

Form Workflows and GPS Tracking are two features of our flagship solution Encore that can help facilitate improved communications, greater transparency, and bolstered productivity in workforces, particularly those that operate in transportation. If a shipping company needs to submit an important document back to the office quickly regarding an order, Form Workflows is an Ultimate-tier level feature of Encore that can bring multiple employees into the fold when it comes to completing and submitting the form. This helps the document get completed quicker and with a higher grade of accuracy. Hosted on a digital interface, nearly instant transmissions of the order form between employees keeps operations smooth, and gives back valuable extra time to shipping companies and manufacturers alike.

GPS Tracking keeps company administrators informed of the whereabouts and activities of their mobile employees, including speeds traveled and a variety of different alerts regarding the status of company vehicles. With GPS Tracking on Encore, along with the rest of our solutions’ end-to-end capabilities, businesses in transportation and international trade can embrace a new era of simplified but powerful logistics.
